Welcome to CCWA Model United Nations 2008-2009

CCWA's Proud Legacy

In March 1945, 16 high schools, each represented by six delegates and a technical advisor, convened at the Western Reserve University under the direction of the Cleveland Council of World Affairs to hold the inaugural Student Conference on International Affairs. The students represented Allied nations in an Assembly of Nations - a precursor to the Model United Nations assemblies held after World War II - to discuss issues of peace settlement. Most of the countries of the Free World involved in the war were represented, and the delegates of each were prepared to present the national view of the country concerned. The audience was composed largely of the members of the Junior Council from the 20 associated high schools.

Theme: Our World in Transition, Our World in Crisis

Whether you're a new or returning delegate, we welcome your participation and hope that you'll enjoy this year's conference. We know that you will gain a wealth of valuable knowledge about your assigned country and the world at large.

This year's theme, Our World in Transition, Our World in Crisis, explores the nature of change in the world today.  From developing countries to industrialized nations, every facet of society is in a perpetual state of flux creating new challenges, tensions, and potential conflicts.  Leaders are faced with making decisions about problems within their nations and regions of the world that affect us all as global citizens.  Will their decisions lead to peaceful resolutions and transitions or will they cause more conflicts and crises?  MUN delegates will investigate some of the current issues at stake, such as rights for refugees, crisis relief, the global food crisis, and terrorism prevention.
